The plastic waste crisis is getting hotter than ever, so a wave of reactions from environmental activists, people demanding worldwide bans on plastic bags and straws using a times, especially at supermarkets and food establishments.
Every year 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean, of which plastic straws account for four percent of the plastic waste (4%), which is extremely harmful to aquatic animals.
The United Nations (UN) estimates that by 2050, in our oceans there will be more plastic waste than fish.
Meanwhile, (UN) predicts that by 2025, ASEAN will be the leading culprit in the waste of plastic in the sea, of which Vietnam “contributes” at least 10% of the total.
This forecast can be avoided as the ASEAN region is now more aware of the plastic crisis. Malaysia has issued a permanent ban on the import of plastic waste, while Vietnam and Thailand have banned the granting of plastic waste import permits. Recently, the Philippines sent tons of plastic waste back to Canada.
Prohibit plastic straws?
While plastic straws are damaging to marine life and devastating the environment, and the reality of using plastic straws cannot be completely banned for a variety of reasons, such as being cheaper, easier to maintain, and not yet available. What solution can completely replace the plastic straw.
However, we cannot for these reasons justify the current reality, that replacement is needed and many people have stepped up to provide eco-friendly products such as bagasse cans, bio-products. School, biological bags … and environmentally friendly straws are also not out of that trend.
Currently straws can be made of metal, bamboo, glass, paper, even rice, and most of all, a wide variety of applications are grass straws.
What is grass straws?
These straws are locally known as “almond grass” (a species of grass that has a perfectly healthy gut inside that can be used to clean teeth and gums). around the Mekong River Delta region in the southwestern part of Vietnam.
Grass straws are the sustainable materials used in today’s straws.
The manufacturing process of grass straws:
Fresh grass straws can be used after they have been cleaned through the following steps: washing the grass – cut short to a length of about 18-20 cm – using an iron bar to clean the truncated almond grass stem – finally wash.
These straws are then sold in bundles, each wrapped in a banana leaf and have a shelf life of 2 weeks, provided that they are stored in a sealed bag and refrigerated (obviously only 2 weeks time too short is difficult for units to consume the product).
To get around this problem one way to make these fresh grass straws last longer while still maintaining quality is to treat them by drying, then letting them dry before storing in a cool dry place. This has created a line of hay straws that have a shelf life of 10-12 months.
Compared to existing straws on the market, the advantage of a grass straw is the absence of chemicals and preservatives, decomposes in 30 days and is affordable, along with the ability to clean teeth and gums.
