Sustainable Eating with Coconut Bowls

Sustainable eating is a hot topic these days, and rightfully so. Shopping locally, consuming seasonal produce, and cutting out pre-packaged foods and single-use plastics from our lives are all vital to reducing our environmental footprint. In this article, blogger Adele Halsall from Everything’s Peachy discusses eco-friendly kitchenware and crockery, reminding us to be conscious of the environmental footprint of not only our food, but our entire bowl.

While the idea of hunting down second-hand crockery in charity shops may be appealing in an eco-friendly way, it is not for everyone – and certainly not for me. That’s why when I first laid eyes on the incredible Coconut Bowls from coconutbowls.com, I fell in love with the idea of literally eating from nature.

What are Coconut Bowls?

Coconut Bowls are the manufacturers of beautiful, eco-friendly bowls handcrafted from the discarded shells of real coconuts. These bowls have an incredible impact – not only do they save millions of coconut shells from being thrown into landfill each year, but they’re also 100% natural, free of BPA, toxins, synthetics, and plastics, and super safe for you and the environment. Not to mention how amazingly natural they look – they’ll do wonders for the planet and your smoothie bowl’s ‘Instagrammability’!

The Journey of a Coconut Bowl

The coconut industry in countries like Vietnam is booming, harvesting coconuts for their flesh, water, sugar, and oil. Unfortunately, 99% of the shells are discarded and burned as waste – that’s billions of shells each year. The burning of these shells significantly contributes to CO2 and methane emissions that are harmful to animals, humans, and the environment, while also wasting an opportunity to make the most of natural resources.

Coconut Bowls reclaim these shells to be cleaned, cut, and sanded into useable bowls by a team of talented artisans, before being polished with organic virgin coconut oil. Every bowl is different, featuring all of the cracks, marks, and dents of a real coconut. When you buy a coconut bowl, you have the satisfaction of knowing that its imperfections make it uniquely yours. That’s pretty cool, isn’t it?

Supporting local communities

Coconut Bowls operates with a focus on providing ethical wages and working conditions to their team in Vietnam. All workers are paid above the fair trade standard, and coconut shells are sourced sustainably from family farms. When purchasing any product it is important to know where it has come from, and under what working conditions it has been produced. Cheaper is not always better.

Sustainable Crockery: The Future

Coconut Bowls sells three types of bowls. Most popular is their Original Coconut Bowl, which has been sanded and polished on the inside and out for a smooth finish. The Natural Coconut Bowl is polished smooth on the inside while retaining a rough, textured outer to give it the feel of a real coconut. The Jumbo Bowl is 30% larger than these bowls, and is ideal for serving big salads, pasta, and buddha bowls. Everything looks and tastes better from a Coconut Bowl – you’ll be whisked away to a tropical paradise with each bite!

On their website, you’ll find other eco-friendly goodies, such as Wooden Forks and Spoons, Bamboo Straws, and Coconut Chopsticks! For every Coconut Bowl sold, they donate one to Plants Not Plastics – an initiative that aims to replace all plastics with biodegradable, plant-based alternatives.

Eating Out of Nature

I was lucky enough to be gifted a couple of my very own bowls (one Natural and one Original) from the lovely team at Coconut Bowls! I’m loving them so far, and am using them for all my nana ice-cream, raw cereal bowls, bircher muesli, and noodles! You can find two of my creations, the Raw Cereal Bowl and the Citrus Soba Noodle Salad on the Coconut Bowls blog.

There are endless colourful and delicious meals to enjoy in your bowls, including stir-fries, sushi, curries, salads, smoothie bowls, desserts, and much more! These bowls are designed to accommodate both warm and cold food of any kind. So get imaginative, get cooking, and snap a photo to join the #coconutbowls community.
