Some facts about disposable plastic bags

1/ Americans use 100 billion plastic bags each year, equivalent to producing 12 million barrels of oil; and it only takes about 14 plastic bags to get the fuel needed to drive a mile.

2/ In average, American family brings home nearly 1,500 plastic shopping bags each year.

3/ According to the US Waste Management Agency, only 1% of plastic bags / packages are returned for recycling. That means, on average, each household recycles only 15 bags / year; the rest is gathered in landfills or thrown away somewhere.

4/ Up to 80% of marine plastic waste pollution comes from land.

5/ At least 267 different species have been affected by plastic waste pollution in the oceans.

6/ Every year, 100,000 marine animals are killed by plastic waste.

7/ One out of three sea turtles was found to have plastic trash in their stomachs.

8/ It takes more than 500 years for a plastic bag to decompose in the landfill. Unfortunately, these bags are not completely decomposed, they decompose into microplastics, which absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment ☹
