At the Songkran festival in 2016 in Thailand, Naresuan University’s study of the bowls and dishes created from leaves was introduced to the experiment. These bowls are made from the leaves of three plants: bastard teak, teak and banyan.
These leaves are impervious to water, can hold hot water; and become a biodegradable bowl instead of the current disposable Tyrofoam dishes. It took the University of Technology professors more than a year to complete the production of these bowls; so they were solid enough and really useful.
In Germany, a company called Leaf Republic also started up with this idea. After 3 years of research and development, so far, this product was officially introduced in June 2016 on Kickstarter capital raising channel and received a large capital package to start widespread production.
A bowl of leaves consists of 3 layers: the top and bottom layers are leaves while the middle is a layer of waterproof paper; that is also produced from the leaves. They are bonded together according to their own production technology without glue or additives. Leaf Republic said no tree would have to be cut down to produce this bowl and the time for each bowl to completely decompose is 28 days. Each this leaf bowl is now sold for £ 8.50.
