HOW DO YOU CLEAN BAMBOO STRAWS?

The current shift to using reusable items creates a lot of new questions including just how do you clean bamboo straws?

If you’re anything like me you would have grown up using plastic straws and throwing them in the trash after using them. Thankfully we know better now!

Not only do we know better, but the solution is easy too. It’s a win-win for you AND the environment.

Taking care and cleaning your bamboo straws couldn’t be easier and there is a selection of methods available whether it’s just day to day use and cleaning, or a monthly deep cleanse.

Day to day cleaning;

  1. Rinse under the tap

Simple as that. If you’ve had a healthy drink with low sugar and no dairy to worry about sticking to the inside of your straw, then just give them a rinse under running water.

  1. Shake in soapy water

Use a jar, or the glass you drank out of, and fill with soapy water, pop your straw inside, cover the top with your hand and shake it like you mean it!

This will force the soapy water inside the straw and rinse out anything clinging to the inner surfaces.

  1. Dishwasher

Yes! You can absolutely put them in the dishwasher.

  1. Air dry

Be sure to air dry your straws whilst they’re propped up to allow the water to drain out of them. Laying them on their sides just leaves them festering in dishwater, not what you want!

  1. Use a cleaning brush

Some packs of bamboo straws come with their own little brush and it’s super cute! If yours doesn’t you can buy one and they usually come in a set with other useful bottle brushes. We like this one with the bamboo handles.

How to deep clean bamboo straws.

Every month or two it’s a good idea to give your bamboo straws a really deep clean.

  1. Add two tablespoons of white vinegar to boiling water and soak the straws for a few mins to sterilize and thoroughly clean your straws.
  1. After cleaning, gently massage a tiny amount of coconut oil onto your straws to maintain their condition.
