The trend of cutting plastic in shops has exploded and lasted for more than a year; gradually making stopping the use of plastic straws a natural thing for civilized young people. Not the time for reminding staff that “don’t give me plastic straws!” when you walk into a drinking shop. Now, plastic straws gradually disappear in shops; but instead are metal straws; bamboo straws; rice flour straws; grass straws… But the battle against waste has never been old, especially with manufacturers.
Zero-waste does not simply mean cutting down on plastic, but cutting down on any waste of natural resources. With the philosophy of “what we save, save us”, the zero-waste movement encourages us to reuse everything we can in life. Zero-waste means “waste zero”; and the edible straw design specifies that idea; by turning millions of tons of waste every day into utility gadgets in life.
Pasta straws
What to do when the restaurant only serves pasta and faces dozens of kilograms of extra noodles every day? Make it a straw instead of plastic! This type of restaurant specializing in only one item is very popular in Italy, with the motto “a job for good is better than nine jobs”; they have thousands of ways to transform ordinary pasta. Feeling that the dried noodles are not good enough to serve customers (Italians prefer fresh noodles); but it is too wasteful to throw them away, a pasta restaurant owner used noodles as straws instead … plastic straws!
With a unique, durable, and economical spirit, the idea of “pasta straws” has conquered two companies in London and Malibu, making them produce a series of similar straws.
Water spinach straws
If the West is admiring edible pasta straws, on the other side of the ocean; cafes in Vietnam have already been using vegetable instead of plastic straws. About 2, 3 years ago, when coming to the Cuc Gach Restaurant chain, you will enjoy the green straws made from … water spinach. No one expected that; only a short time later; the body of spinach made a big landing in the shops, contributing to repelling the plastic waste.
How to make spinach straws is surprisingly simple: You just need to clean, choose the hard body and cut two small holes at the ends. No one had expected the “rural creativity” is just as convenient as plastic straws. As with pasta straws, spinach straws are completely edible and reusable.
Other edible straws made of rice flour and vegetable starch
That’s it – a straw can bring “healthy” and “balance” life to both the earth and your body! The idea of using vegetable fibers to make straws of Truong The Tien, a start-up owner in Ho Chi Minh City become the inspiration for many other manufacturers in Vietnam to make edible straws from rice and vegetables, a versatile product that not only addresses the quality of the surrounding environment but also improves the quality of your own health. These straws are recycled from 100% rice starch, potato starch, tapioca starch, banana starch … and can completely be processed into dishes when finished using!
There are tens of thousands of ways to take advantage of these straws before dumping dozens of kilograms of material into the trash: Making vegetarian shrimp chips with a microwave, frying into snack sticks, grinding and adding in smoothies, or simply is … hotpot dip to increase daily fiber intake!
In fact, it’s hard to imagine the processing of used straws becoming food, but the value of the edible straw is not limited to the practical side ahead. It is an encouraging symbol, an inspiration. If the leftovers can also be useful, and conversely, the items that should have been put in the trash can turn out to be delicious food, then the waste reduction process is not complicated or inconvenient or expensive as many people think. The question is, do you really want to protect the environment and your own life?
