Are Pasta Straws the Next Big Thing?

With plastic straws being systematically banned across the globe, it’s been very interesting to see the various alternatives emerging on the market.

From re-usable glass, stainless steel and bamboo straws, to paper, seaweed and now, pasta straws!

On the forefront of this trend in South Africa, is Lupa Osteria.  The restaurant chain received some media attention earlier this year when they ditched their plastic straws and replaced them with pasta straws.

There’s no doubt that pasta straws are by far better than plastic straws.  However, paying close attention to the details will help determine whether they are the best alternative.

To help you make up your mind, here are the pros and cons of pasta straws:

PROS

Pasta straws are made with two natural ingredients – wheat and water.  This makes the straws 100% compostable and biodegradable, so a big win for the environment.  These straws apparently last very well too.  They are estimated to hold their shape and remain usable for up to 3 hours.  Additionally, they will not collapse when consuming thicker beverages like milkshakes.  They are also Vegan friendly and won’t affect the taste of your drink (unlike bamboo straws).

CONS

One of the cons if you live in SA, is that these straws are not yet mainstream, so not readily available.  You would likely have to import them which will add to the cost.  They are not so cheap either.  The Amazing Pasta Straw currently sells them for 69.90 dollars per carton of 1000, which works out around R 1.00 per straw.  Pasta straws are currently also limited to one color and size, so custom branding or fun colors are not an option.  Also keep in mind that they are not gluten-free (although they are currently working on gluten-free versions).
